Bell X-1

The
Bell X-1 was the world's first successful aircraft to be built for
supersonic flight. It appears that other aircraft probably did go
supersonic before Chuck Yeager piloted the X-1 into mach 1, but those
were accidental speeds achieved during dives in aircraft that were not
intended to reach those speeds.
